vintage heaven on a fashion rail
The vintage fashion market at Cape Town's Labia (now on every every Sat) is the most delightful treasure trove of retro fashion finds I have seen in a long time... and its SO affordable. I found loads of fashion bargains there ... the prettiest Mad-Men inspired dresses for under R100, vintage blouses from R50 the most awesome retro boots and shoes from R350. Go and check it out. (Bonus is you can try everything on in the bathrooms inside the Labia.)
Another special find is the Love Project Gift shop (literally just behind the Labia, opp Lifestyle on kloof) It is a non-profit organization that sells more than 60 different community projects' artistic products, and I found the most fabulous retro crocheted pieces, interesting brooches and gorgeous homeware and baby wear... also very affordable. Plus it's all for a good cause, so no guilt purchases here!

U gotta luv it
Fashion allows you to express yourself in so many ways. It visually shows the world who you are (today) and allows you to be somebody completely different (tomorrow). Fashion is non-invasive... you can try new colours, new styles, new trends without having to commit to anything, because if you're not loving what it looks like, you can simply take it off! It's not a tattoo!
Fashion allows us to play, to experiment, to try out new looks, trends, colours and era's. It's supposed to be fun, so start having fun with your look, if you aren't already.... especially with all these fabulous AFFORDABLE fashion items I have found for you below.

Day 2 of sourcing for my Cosmo fashion shoot
So having established that my colour theme for my Cosmo shoot will be all the pretty soft shades of pinks, vintage rose and vanilla whites, today was shoe sourcing day... My favourite part :)
It takes me the longest time as I drool over almost every pair I see and spend most of the day working out what I would need to cut back on this month in order to afford another pair of OMG heel heaven!
Normally my cutbacks relate to the kids... when it's a toss-up between those shoes and their school stationary for next year, DUH! They can write with twigs and rub out with press stick. Oh suck it up! It works just as good!
It was a very successful shoe searching day, I am thrilled at what I found (My feet are sulking big time though... major dose of shoe envy. It's the last time I take them sourcing with me, I swear!)
Here's a sneak preview of what I gorgeous heels I found.... I am after pretty nude and soft tan colours, the shoe colour of the season. It's going to be a tough call to decide which shoes I will be shooting with.

It's sourcing week for my Cosmo shoot
this week you can follow me on twitter @afashionfriend as I source the stores for the sexiest, sweetest candy-coloured lingerie for my Cosmo shoot for the Feb issue. Yes we work 3 months in advance!!
I will be shooting SA celeb Cindy Nel for a special booklet that'll be inserted into Our Feb issue of Cosmo.
I will be out there sourcing and posting the following fabulous fashion finds for my shoot: you can look forward to seeing gorgeous lingerie, hot date dresses and beautiful romantic items in Summers prettiest colour trends... sugar sweet pinks, vintage rose and pretty whipped creams.
This means you not only get to see what I will be choosing to shoot Cindy Nel in (before she even gets to see it) but it also means you can plan your Valentine's outfit months in advance (and start budgeting for it too!) It's time to indulge and pamper... see you tomorrow for the first of the fabulous finds.

what she said
Fashion sales always bring out those voices in my head that makes the actress in United State of Tara seem like a lonely only child.
I can hear my Jewish inner (non) fashion voice saying "Buy it! Buy it! It's half price! It's for nothing! Buy it!"
Rule Nr 1: That's not the voice you want to listen to when looking at an item of sale clothing that (no matter how long you or it lives) is just NEVER, ever, going to come back in fashion. This purchase hardly ever makes it out your wardrobe (Note to self: recycle bubble skirt)
The other precious voice is very... positive... "Awww they only have size 10's left (I am a size 12 - on a good day). Mmmm... Buy it! Buy it! Buy it! It's half price! It's for nothing! Buy it! It will fit you when you lose weight. Think of it as an incentive to diet..."
Rule Nr 2: No amount of buying the wrong size makes you lose weight. Ever. There is nothing worse than feeling a bit gezundt around the waist and hips added to the pangs of guilt that you now have more clothes you can't fit in to. In fact that feeling alone (the pang of guilt) you will read as hunger, and it will actually make you eat more. This is not a healthy fashion purchase.
But my worst inner voice is that very scary, competitive one: "Buy it! Buy it! Buy it! It's half price! It's for nothing! Buy it for god sake before somebody else does and then you'll be sorry." It comes back louder if, for a second, you put the sale item down, and another (real) person picks it up. Oh hell, that will do it. The Voice then turns into the audio from The Exorcist "You see! I told you to buy it!! Stupid idiot! See what you've done! You've just lost out on the bargain of the century and it was (suddenly) gorgeous."
So you end up hovering around the vessel praying to every known fashion god to let the beeyatch release it... put.. it.. down. And if and when she does you then snatch, run, swipe and eeuww.. you just hate it when you try it on at home.
Rule NR 3: When it comes to buying fashion sale garments just run your own race. Do not look behind you, do not look next you. Just keep focused on the item in your hand and ask yourself the important epiphany-resulting question... "How would you feel if your best friend bought this for you as a gift?" That should put it all in perspective and things should work out quite nicely after that.
Now because I have been involved in retail therapy for over 20 years, and because I am your New Best Fashion Friend you will no longer have to rummage, search, fight and trawl the sales because today I am heading into Fashion Sale Territory for you, and I will post my fabulous SALE fashion finds over the next couple of days. Sit back and relax the good stuffs coming over.

I popped into the waterfront today and was pleasantly suprised
When it comes to the old fashion retail faithfuls they still do have the power to surprise me with some fabulous fashion gems. I know you hate having to go through all the masses of badly arranged rails to hunt for something that you might be able to wear... so, (loving this job a lot) I have braved the instore merchandising chaos for you and pulled the following fab items you should be wearing this summer :)
I am pretty obsessed with the pretty military trend at the moment (soft dirty pastels mixed with military fatigues) and mixing masculine worker-wear with feminine ditsy and wallpaper-print floral (a soft floral blouse, worn tucked into a pair of utility pants (cinched in at the waist with a thin leather belt and effortlessly rolled up to the ankles) teamed with a pair of roughed up worker boots ... kind of Little House on the Prairie meets I'm a Lumberjack ...loving it!!)
You will be so impressed with the well-priced pretty military looks at Edgars and Foschini's... See the fashion posts below called PRETTY MILITARY
